NPDES Permitting Update
Informational Meetings on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations

OVERVIEW:

Recent federal changes in the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) program resulted in new requirements that will affect many livestock producers in Illinois. These rules were revised for several reasons:

* The livestock industry has undergone dramatic changes since the original rules were written in the 1970s.

* There was a need to address continued discharges and runoff of manure from all sectors of the livestock industry.

* The new CAFO rules update regulations to reflect structural changes, such as consolidation, in the livestock industry.

* The rules will help correct improper management practices.

DISCUSSION TOPICS:

At these informational meetings, IEPA staff will address topics that include:

* What is required undewr the new CAFO rules

* Who must apply for a CAFO permit

* The definition of a large CAFO

* The definition of a medium CAFO

* Where CAFO owners and operators can obtain application forms

* Who to contact for assistance
